Bravo Store Spotlight: Dan’s Discount Jewelry & Pawn
About Dan’s Discount Jewelry & Pawn
With locations currently in both Florida and Kentucky, Dan’s Discount Jewelry & Pawn prides itself in maintaining clean and well-lit showrooms that welcomes both new and old pawn customers alike.
Owner Bryce Jeter is an experienced pawnbroker with over 30 years in the business. Over the past few decades, he has sold, bought, and opened brand spanking new stores. Currently, they have another location under construction and eagerly awaits the grand opening of the new store so he can hire someone to dance in a chicken suit to bring in traffic (I already called it, so don’t get any ideas).
Dan’s Discount is actually relatively new to the Bravo family and recently converted from the CompuPawn platform. With their wealth of experience in the industry, we were flattered with the positive feedback they supplied us in regards to the transition onto the Bravo platform. Instead of me paraphrasing his comments, here is what Owner Bryce Jeter said about joining the Bravo user community.
“I was amazed at how fast the employees picked Bravo up. You can tell it was written by pawnbrokers for pawnbrokers. I thought about switching years ago, but I was very hard headed and worried about the conversion process. We’ve converted two stores in the past four weeks and the conversion process went smoothly – I was not surprised in any way at how smoothly everything transitioned and converted. Support has been excellent – every time we call or submit a case, I definitely feel like they listen and take action. I give Bravo’s Support Team a 10/10!
I’d also give Bravo’s software a 10/10. I’ve been in the business 30 years and have used many other pawn software. Bravo has been great and we love a lot of the features and capability that we aren’t even using yet. We converted to get our inventory online and on Buya, and although we aren’t using the full capability of Bravo, we are still very pleased. The texting feature is awesome with the way you can breakdown how you text and do events. But back to the overall general use, I’ve been amazed – really didn’t train any of our employees, maybe just a few minutes but they understood the system immediately. Needless to say, it’s really easy to learn and to pick up quickly.”
Words of Advice
Dan’s Discount opened a location in Danville, KY, this year and the city currently had no laws or regulations governing the pawn shops. However, they do LeadsOnline at their own will because they know it’s the right thing to do. This caught the attention of the mayor and the police chief, where they called Owner Bryce Jeter during a city hall meeting and put him on speakerphone to talk about the benefits of pawn shops being on a computer system (and he recommended Bravo too!). Many of the other pawn shops in attendance were still doing handwritten tickets and approached Bryce afterwards for help on getting onto a computer system.
“If you ever want your shop to run while you aren’t there, you need a software system. Bravo is a great start. As far as growth, you need trained employees, managers with experience, and a customer service first strategy.”
Bryce also contributes a lot of his success with his pawn shops from having a nice and welcoming building. Lighting and a clean showroom floor is enough to entice people who’ve never been in a pawn shop before to come through your doors and become loyal customers. His last location was in the thick of 4 pawn shops within a city block and yet, in the first year, had around 1,000 customers say they’ve never been in a pawn shop before. Make your shop a place people would hang out – bright, well lit, clean, and a dvr system to keep employees accountable.
“The first step to running and operating a pawn shop happily is to have a software system. We use Bravo, we recommend it to other pawnbrokers, and don’t plan on switching again.”
On other software systems, when it goes down a store either has to close their doors or handwrite tickets. Previously, Dan’s Discount’s system might not work once or twice a month, making them have to handwrite tickets because it’s not in their policy to close their doors. With Bravo, it has not gone down once, it never stops, never quits, no glitches, no drops in connection, never have to handwrite tickets, and most importantly, don’t have to put a note on the door and close for a day or two – can stay open all the time.
“I mentioned earlier the importance of taking pride in the appearance of our stores and one of the biggest takeaways from Pawn Expo, was that when we toured the Bravo facility in Las Vegas, we saw that same pride in their business – that they are a well organized, and well-oiled machine in a state-of-the-art facility. They take pride in their name, brand, and customers, just as you would do in your shops. I’ve toured the Google and Apple facilities and I would put Bravo right up there, they care about their current customers, about growth, and staying state-of-the-art.”
Dan’s Discount isn’t new to the pawn industry with years of buying, selling, and opening pawn shops. With that experience, also comes insight into what works and what doesn’t. They’ve always known how important a computer system is, especially once you get to around 10 or 11 stores, which they plan on doing once again. Now, with Bravo on their side, they can explore newer avenues like eCommerce while also having a system that supports their growth.
“I would highly recommend anyone who might be on the fence about converting because it may be too hard or too difficult, to just do it. Bravo makes it really easy and takes all the second guessing out of the equation.”
