Poster boards, cell phone, and a tripod – all you need for professional looking product photos.

First impressions can be everything when it comes to selling products. Having a professional, clean, and clear photo is very important. Luckily, taking a good looking photo no longer means you need to have an expensive, bulky camera. What is very important for professional looking photos is the background setting in which the photo is taken. Having a clean backspace so the focus is on the product and not the surrounding area. Increasing your sales with professional photos does not mean investing in a SLR camera.

Large cameras with interchangeable lenses are appealing but are in fact disadvantageous for online platforms. These types of cameras and lenses increase the quality of the photos taken, meaning the pixel count or resolution is higher. With this higher resolution the photos become a larger file size. This larger file means customers shopping online will have to wait longer for photos to load and may become impatient. In fact, most smart phones have very high pixel resolution, much higher than is necessary for online shopping platforms. Snapping photos with your smart phone camera and a small tripod will give them high quality and stability.

The setting that the product sits in for the photo is much more important. If the customer can completely focus on the product they will have a better idea of what they are looking at and a higher chance of purchasing the product. Building and creating a small space that photos can be taken in will be very beneficial – four pieces of plywood painted white or four sturdy foam presentation boards will create a “light box” ideal for taking product photos. Creating this white space will allow for light to bounce naturally off the product and make the product stand out more than a dark or cluttered background.

Once you have taken the product photo and are satisfied with the quality make sure not to over edit the image. Over editing by increasing or decreasing saturation, adjusting the brightness, sharpness, and more can drastically change the appearance of the product. When customers see a photo online of the product they will expect to receive an identical item. If the editing adjustments has changed the appearance of the product too much you will have a confused or dissatisfied customer.

As online shopping becomes more saturated with businesses and shoppers it has become increasingly important to stand out. Having professional looking product photos will make your products and your business appear more attractive and dependable. Tripods and smart phone cameras can give you great results. eBay has even found a 5% increase in sales with better quality product photos. Happy snapping!
